Where it fits

A side window, the quarter glass behind a door, a tumbler or a water bottle. Any hard, smooth surface takes a decal: glass, paint, metal, hard plastic. Read how to apply a vinyl decal before it goes on.

How it goes on

  1. Wash the spot with soapy water, dry it, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Tape the decal across its middle, step back and check it sits level.
  3. Peel one half of the backing, press from the tape outward with a card, then do the other half.
  4. Peel the top sheet back on itself, slowly and close to the surface.

About this design

The starting tree, standing tall

One upright pole carries the starting tree: two wide staging bars on top, each with four little bulbs hanging below, then five pairs of round lamps on arms down the sides. Everything is a flat, solid shape, so the whole tower reads cleanly from far off, and the stagger of bulbs and lamps makes sense as you get closer.

Know the wait between the last amber and the green better than your own phone number? Then stand this tree upright in the small side window behind the driver's door, the way it stands at the line.

Before it goes on glass

Keep any decal off the windshield. On the rear window, California, Texas and Florida tie a decal to outside mirrors on both sides, New York bars stickers its DMV commissioner has not authorized, and your own state may differ, so read its vehicle code.
