Ovals, codes and characters

Euro oval and kanji decals

Two kinds of design in our catalog speak in a code: the Euro oval, with a few letters inside a ring, and the kanji, with a column of Japanese characters. Here is what each of ours says, so you know what you are putting on your car before anyone asks.

Where the Euro oval comes from

The Euro oval borrows its shape from the oval code sticker drivers use on international trips to show the country where a car is registered. As a decal, the form kept the outline and the short code and left the official purpose behind. On your car or laptop the code can stand for whatever you choose: a state, a country, a family name, a caliber.

On our ovals the vinyl and the glass share the drawing. On the AK Alaska Euro Oval, a thin outer ring circles a solid oval, and the letters are cut out of that solid oval, so you read them in whatever sits behind the decal. The Chihuahua Euro Oval works the same way, with a sitting dog cut out in place of letters. A solid oval is a big, simple outline, and it holds together from across a parking lot.

What our ovals say

Two of our ovals name a place. The AK Alaska Euro Oval carries AK for Alaska, and the IS Iceland Euro Oval carries IS for Iceland. One names a person rather than a place: the POPS Euro Oval spells out POPS in full.

Three ovals name what you shoot. The 12ga Euro Oval reads 12ga, short for 12 gauge, set inside the outline of a shotgun shell cut into the oval. The .38 Euro Oval and the .40 Euro Oval carry those two caliber numbers. They sit on our hunting and fishing shelf next to the dogs, ducks and turkeys.

The Chihuahua Euro Oval has no letters at all. A Chihuahua sits in the middle of the oval, ears up, cut out of the solid vinyl, so the dog itself is the glass. It is the one oval that speaks without a code, and anyone who knows the breed reads it at once.

Kanji on a decal

Our kanji designs are Japanese kanji set in a single column, and they read from top to bottom. Each design is named for the meaning of the word it spells, and that meaning is the one we give you here.

The characters are drawn as brush strokes, thick through the middle and tapering at the ends, and every stroke is solid vinyl with the glass showing in the gaps between them. The column makes them tall designs, which suit a side window behind the driver, a tumbler or the edge of a laptop lid better than a long rear window. Before a kanji goes on a car window, read where a decal can go on a car.

合氣道, aikido, reads from the top character down.

What our kanji designs say

Five words, five designs. The Champion Kanji spells 優勝者, champion, in three characters. The Aikido Kanji spells 合氣道, the name of the martial art aikido, also in three. The Capricorn Kanji spells 山羊座, the zodiac sign Capricorn.

The other two are shorter. The Patience Kanji spells 忍耐, patience, in two characters, and the Destruction Kanji spells 破壊, destruction, also in two. Two very different words make the same kind of column on the glass, so choose by meaning, not by look.

If you want to know how a word is pronounced, or the story behind one of the characters, ask someone who reads Japanese before the decal goes on. A word on your car is one you will be asked about, and it helps to be able to say more than its meaning.
