Where it fits

A rear window corner, a toolbox lid, a cooler side or a laptop lid. Any hard, smooth surface takes a decal: glass, paint, metal, hard plastic. Read how to apply a vinyl decal before it goes on.

How it goes on

  1. Wash the spot with soapy water, dry it, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Tape the decal across its middle, step back and check it sits level.
  3. Peel one half of the backing, press from the tape outward with a card, then do the other half.
  4. Peel the top sheet back on itself, slowly and close to the surface.

About this design

The shipping label, arrow and all

Copied from the stamp on a moving box, the design puts a solid arrow pointing straight up over "This Side Up" in tall, condensed block capitals, with "UP" alone on the second line. There is no outline or thin detail anywhere. Every letter is a thick slab, so the message is readable from well behind you in traffic.

Cooler lids are where the joke works best, with the arrow pointing the right way when the lid is shut. Fans of dry humor will like it, and so will anyone whose tailgate has seen more than one upside-down moment.

Before it goes on glass

Keep any decal off the windshield. On the rear window, California, Texas and Florida tie a decal to outside mirrors on both sides, New York bars stickers its DMV commissioner has not authorized, and your own state may differ, so read its vehicle code.
